Yes, you read the title correctly. I was in a commercial! But before you run to the TV to look for me, I’ll stop you right now and tell you to head on over to YouTube instead, because that’s where the commercial was posted XD It was for an anime convention which took place in Washington last March.
As you probably already know, Kurt is a film student in CSUN, and he’s always loved making videos. Every year, Sakura Con holds a commercial contest for their event on YouTube. And for the past 2 years, Kurt has won first place. Usually, he shoots the commercial by himself (or with his dad’s help), but since this was his third time entering, he wanted to make it special. So during his visit to the Philippines last January, he enlisted the help of some of his friends for this project. The final cast and crew included Kurt, Ezra, Bianca, Cyrus, Jan-Jan, Don and me. We shot near Kurt’s grandma’s house so his family stopped by occasionally to check up on us and see if we needed anything too.
We spent an entire Sunday shooting the commercial. I never realized how much time and effort it takes to film a 30-second commercial (we had to shoot the video and sound parts separately). But thinking back, I realize that this might be because we took a lot of breaks (since it rained a couple of times that day). And because almost everyone was friends with one another, the atmosphere was very relaxed compared to the mad rush that probably takes place behind the scenes of other shoots. I had a lot of fun during filming and I even learned a lot.
Enough of my ramblings, here’s the final product. And for those who are curious – yes, Kurt did win the contest for the third time with this entry (congratulations Kurt!). We’re so proud of him (and ourselves too I guess, nyahaha XD)
Here are some pictures we took the day we filmed:
We started our day early because we had to pick up Kurt’s friends who would be joining us on the shoot
The location we shot in was a private resort in Asiaville:
Kurt shot Don’s part first so the girls and I had time to get ready
Ezra styled my hair for me that day
Don in his costume. It was SCORCHING HOT that day, and his costume didn’t even allow him to sit down. But he was trooper and never complained.
Making adjustments on Don’s costume
Taking a break while waiting for the rain to stop
(We were worried that Ezra might accidentally stab Kurt during filming)
That’s a nice look Cy XD
After all the footage were completed, we recorded the spoken parts:
If you want to see more photos, check out this Behind-the-Scene video that Kurt made:
(Kurt shot some of the footage in Japan when he visited his mom there last year. And yes, his dad helped him make his costume :D)
To end this entry, here are some group shots we took before wrapping it up for the day:
Thanks for making us part of this experience Kurt, and congratulations once again!
