I’m alive! (Life updates)

What’s this? An update?? After over 2 years of complete silence??? Is this for real????

Believe it or not, I’m still around and this blog is still alive, albeit barely. I thought for sure that WordPress would have shut this blog down by now due to inactivity, but thankfully it’s still up. These past few days I’ve been enjoying reading through my old entries and reminiscing about the good old days. I never thought that this blog would see another entry, but I realized that I really liked reading (and even writing) about things I did in the past, and if I want to continue to have something to look back on in the future, then I should probably start updating more.

I may have dropped the ball on this blog, but that was only because of how crazy things got over the past two years. If you look at the last entry I made, it was dated February 29, 2020. I guess I don’t need to elaborate what happened around March 2020 for you to understand what I mean when I say things got “crazy”. Sure, Japan didn’t have it as bad as other parts of the world, but it was still a very unstable time for all of us. These past 2 years had been a whirlwind of emotions as I worked to finish my PhD in the middle of the pandemic, but things are starting to settle down (or at least I hope they are) and I finally earned my degree, which means I now have some time to breathe and get back to some of my old hobbies.

However weird it may be, I plan to continue my whole “Instabits” series, picking up where I left off in my last entry (June 2019). I think this series is the closest thing I have to a diary since it documents my monthly milestones. I already started editing the video compilations of my IG stories for the series, but it seemed strange to just pick up the blog right where I left off after I’ve been gone for so long, so I figured that before I do that I should probably give you guys a general update of what has been happening in my life these past 2 years. Don’t worry, I won’t talk about everything that happened, but I want to share some of my major life updates:

(There’s only six in total, so hopefully this entry won’t be too long.)

1. Ray and I got married!

I am officially a married woman! Ray and I decided to tie the knot on our 2nd anniversary as boyfriend-girlfriend, which was on May 3, 2021. We always talked about getting married after I finished my PhD, so this was a bit of a surprise for both of us. I always pictured us moving back to the Philippines together after I graduated, and having our wedding there. However, after talking about it and consulting with our friends and loved ones, we figured “why wait?”, especially in these uncertain times. We were together most of the time anyway, and we definitely knew we wanted to marry each other, so there’s really no reason for us to put it off. The only thing we really needed to postpone was starting a family, since I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle being pregnant while doing my PhD experiments. Plus it would be very dangerous for the fetus to be exposed to the many chemicals and X-rays that I frequently handle in my lab. Aside from that, we realized that there was nothing stopping us from getting married while I was still a student.

Our wedding took place in the middle of the pandemic. We just had a small ceremony at our house because Kyoto was in a State-of-Emergency during that time and large gatherings were discouraged. Japan’s borders were closed to outsiders which meant that none of our family members were able to attend our wedding physically. Naturally they were sad about not being able to help us with the wedding preparations, but fortunately we had a lovely group of friends who helped us with everything. And thanks to Zoom, they were still able to attend the ceremony virtually. We were worried that they would be upset that we decided to have a wedding which they could not attend physically, but they were all very supportive and extremely happy that we were finally getting married. (But we did have to promise that we would have another ceremony/wedding reception in the Philippines once this was possible.)

Our small wedding party at home

I made a vlog about how we prepared for our wedding, so you can just watch that:

2. We’re pregnant!

Like I mentioned in #1, Ray and I really want to start our family but we had to wait until I finished my PhD because there was no way my mental health could handle the stress of being a PhD student and being pregnant at the same time. Also, we didn’t want to risk our baby’s health as I did my experiments around harmful substances. But once I passed my dissertation defense and was cleared to graduate then we were good to go!

Maybe I’ll make a separate entry about my experiences so far of being pregnant, but for now I’m just happy to announce that we’re expecting our baby bunny next year.

3. I finished my PhD

I mentioned it several times already, but obviously I had to include it in this list since this had been my big goal for the past 4 years. It was the whole reason I came to Japan in the first place. My PhD started off great, but just like most PhDs, it became the source of many sleepless nights, anxiety attacks and tears. This was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire life (well, so far…). Doing my PhD in the middle of the pandemic was not fun at all. There were so many times that I wanted to give up. I definitely struggled A LOT. I won’t talk about everything I went through here, maybe I’ll write about it in a future blog entry if I feel like it. But just know that my mental health was at an all time low during the last year of my PhD and Ray had to talk me through several panic attacks. If it weren’t for the support and constant prayers of Ray, my family, and friends, I probably would have broken down and gone back to the Philippines. I’m just so thankful that I had that support system to pick me up and remind me of God’s plans during my darkest days.

(Just to be clear, my struggles were not a reflection of how my professors and labmates treated me. They were all very kind and supportive. I struggled mostly because of my pride and refusal to relinquish control of my life. I didn’t go through any “abuse” that many PhD students go through, but the journey is just really difficult because you feel like most of what’s happening are out of your control and things don’t always go according to plan. I think any PhD student can relate to this.)

But despite all the challenges, I finally got my degree and I’m free from both academic life and my mental health struggles ā¤

My dream of wearing a hakama for my graduation was finally fulfilled
Had to represent UP too so I wore a sablay the following day for some photos

Vlog : My first month in Japan

Hallu everyone! I know I haven’t been blogging lately since I have very little free time, but I thought I would post a quick update. I’ve been pretty busy with school but I think I’m adjusting pretty well to living in a new country by myself. My first month was amazing (you can read about it in my April INSTABITS). I’m not going to talk about it again in this entry, but I figured I would share this short video I made of my first four weeks here in Japan. It contains a bunch of clips I managed to take of the places I visited. It’s not really a proper vlog, more of a compilation of the highlights of my first month here. Enjoy! šŸ™‚

Color Manila Run 2017

From the title you can probably tell that this post is obviously late. But then again, when have I ever posted on time?

Back in January 2017 (more than a year ago, oops) Dustin and I joined the Color Manila Run. We’ve been dreaming of being part of the Color Run for a while now, so when the opportunity came up, we decided to sign up for it. We did it on impulse, without considering other factors, such as how we would get to MOA by 4am that day, and the fact that we signed up for a 10k run when we hardly exercised over the holidays. Thankfully Raf opened his home to us (and even gave us a ride to MOA early that morning), and the run wasn’t that intense since people were more concerned about taking photos than actually running.

This was my first 10k run (and Dustin’s too I think). I remember we were so nervous days before that we ended up over training and giving ourselves mild electrolyte imbalance. We both had to spend an entire day in bed and almost missed the race. Thankfully we recovered in time and we had a great experience.

I posted a few photos from the race on my January 2017 INSTABITS, as well as my Week 1/52 of my 2017 project, and this weekend I finally finished editing a very short vlog from that day. Enjoy šŸ˜€

(Silly me forgot to change my GoPro housing so it was covered in colorful dust after this race… Fortunately it still works)

Phuket (Thailand) 2017 : Diamond Princess Cruise

My last entry for our Singapore – Malaysia – Thailand cruise last February. It’s been more than a year so I should probably finish uploading all of these.

After Penang, our next stop was Phuket, Thailand. The port was small so we had to take a tender to go ashore:

It was Ezra’s first time going on the tender. She was pretty excited.

Our first stop was the Thai Cultural Village:

We were greeted by performers wearing Thai national outfits:

We were ushered into the theater for the performance:

They performed various traditional dances that showed off the rich Thai culture

Diamond Princess takes us to Malaysia (Kelang & Penang)

Hallu everyone! Finally an update on our Singapore trip/cruise which took place last February. Yes, this entry is almost a year late XD

If I remember correctly, we left off after our had just arrived in Singapore and we spent our day wandering around the Cloud Forest at the Gardens By The Bay (blog entry here). The followingĀ morning, we headed to the Cruise terminal to board the Diamond Princess

After 5 cruises, I finally made it to Platinum Card status šŸ˜€

boarding (3)

This basically means I get preferred boarding (goodbye long lines) and free internet on the ship (hooray!)

boarding (4)

Ezra was really excited about being back on the Diamond Princess, since her last cruise was also on this same ship (Japan cruise blog entry here)

She was most excited about the buffet

boarding (7)

Her goal on the cruise was to fatten up (since she lost a lot of weight in the US), while my goal was to not eat too much XD

After lunch we took a nap, attended the safety drill then checked out the sail-away party that was happening on the pool deck:

We spent our first day on the ship relaxing and eating. That evening my parents and I went back to the pool deck to watch Dr. Strange on the big screen.

The following day the Diamond Princess docked in Kelang, Malaysia:

Singapore 2017 : Lost in the cloud

Ezra visited the Philippines last February so we grabbed the opportunity to go on a cruise with her. The last time we went on a cruise together as a family was back in 2015, for our Japan-Korea cruise.Ā This time my parents signed us up for a cruise that would take us around Thailand and Malaysia. It begins (and ends) in Singapore so we had to fly there. We wanted to explore Singapore as well so we decided to arrive a day before the ship was scheduled to leave.

We took an early flight so we were all pretty much half awake at the airport. And it didn’t help that Ezra set her alarm to go off at 1am that morning, and just kept snoozing it for the next hour.

We found this giant golden chicken at the airport because 2017 is the year of the rooster. (This was in February so the Lunar New Year had just ended.)

My parents managed to get hold of Singapore Airline’s promo fare, which included free entrance to Gardens by the Bay. We had to claim our tickets to the parkĀ  at the airport when we arrived in Singapore:

Just like all our previous visits to Singapore, we stayed at the Strand Hotel in Bencoolen Street.

We used to get the family room but this time Ezra and I shared a room and my parents stayed next door

One thing we love about this place is that it’s located right across the street from a Kopitiam/food court. This year we learned that it’s now called Food Republic.

Naturally that’s where we decided to have lunch

The place was packed, we had to wait a while before securing a table

I ordered my favorite – roast duck and char siew. We also got some sugar cane juice to wash things down

After this we looked for a taxi to take us to Gardens by the Bay:

Just like the airport, the place was decorated for Lunar New Year:

One-day tour of Taiwan (Goodbye Golden Princess)

This entry is about the last day of our Japan-Taiwan cruise last September 2016. It’s over a year late, but I can only edit and sort photos during my free time, which I don’t get often.

We spent most of our last morning on the Golden Princess packing to go home. We had to be off the ship by 8am, so we were up bright and early. We were in a rush trying to make it on time so naturally I wasn’t able to take photos, but here’s two from when we were waiting at the Wheelhouse Bar for our turn to disembark.

Since our flight wasn’t until the evening, we booked an independent tour around Taiwan. Our guide picked us up at the port and took us to Yehliu Geopark, where we saw lots of interesting rock formations near the sea:

The place was beautiful, but it was also extremely hot! We were sweating buckets by the end of our visit here. In the photo above I was barely able to keep my hand on the rail for the shot because it felt like molten lava.

Ishigaki 2016 : talking dolls and balloons

On the third day of our Japan-Taiwan cruise, the Golden Princess brought us to Ishigaki. We were having breakfast that morning, trying to plan out our day when I heard someone exclaim “Hindi ako makapaniwala sa nakikita ko ngayon!” (Translation : “I can’t believe what I’m seeing right now!”). When we looked up, we saw Nathan standing next to our table with a huge smile on his face šŸ˜€

ishigaki (1)

For those who might be confused, Nathan was the Head Waiter in our dining room when we did our 7-day Japan-Korea cruise in 2015 (blog entry HERE). He was extremely kind to us and our dinners usually ended up being over two hours long because we had such a great time chatting with him every night. That was back on the Diamond Princess so we definitely didn’t expect to see him on this ship! It was such a pleasant surprise šŸ˜€

Here’s a photo from our Diamond Princess cruise in 2015 with Nathan:

This was taken during the formal evening, so the staff were in formal attire too. That’s Nathan on the right, and Yuni (our waiter) on the left. We were hoping to run into Yuni too, but Nathan told us he was on a different ship.

We stayed to chat with Nathan for a while and promised we’d look for him later that evening before heading back to our rooms to get ready for a day of sight-seeing.

Our ship didn’t dock in Ishigaki so we had to take the tenders to go ashore:

We made it to shore, yay!

It was *extremely* humid that day. But at least it didn’t rain like the previous day.

Our first stop was Family Mart because we needed to exchange currency. Of course we did a bit of shopping there as well. I found these coffee-flavored ice cream balls there which was really good:

Brinks liked them so much that she bought another pack for herself.

We also found another convenience store nearby where we ended up buying some beauty products. I found the Sea Breeze Deo Waters that I love:

They were a bit pricier here compared to the ones I bought at Don Quixote in Okinawa.

We found this shopping street so we decided to look around to buy some pasalubong

Exploring Okinawa (Shuri Castle and Kokusai Street)

Day 2 of my birthday cruise from last year (Day 1 blog here). Since Brinks justified her expenses for this trip by telling herself that it was a birthday present to herself, my parents told the staff that she was also celebrating her birthday. Which explains why we woke up to two sets of balloons and greeting cards on our door that morning.

“Birthday” Kupos~

Hello Okinawa!

We didn’t plan on leaving the ship until later that afternoon so we spent our morning walking around and watching a culinary show at the Princess Theater:

The culinary show is usually very funny, unfortunately we couldn’t understand it this time because it was all in Mandarin

After the show Brinks and I went to the pool deck to take some photos

Birthday Cruise : Keelung, Taiwan

For my birthday last year my parents decided to go on a short cruise around Japan/Taiwan, and as a special treat they told me I could invite a friend to come with us! As soon as they told me, I contacted Brinky who immediately jumped on board. Princess Cruises had a “Buy 2 Get 2 Free” promo during this period, so it was perfect. My parents booked their trips at a regular rate and Brinks and I were the “Get 2 Free“. (Of course there were still taxes and plane tickets to be paid, but the cruise fares were waived :D)

The cruise begins in Keelung, Taiwan so we took an early flight to get there.

During our last cruise my parents were finally upgraded to Platinum status, so we were able to skip the long check in lines this time around, yay!

The ship we would be sailing on is the Golden Princess, which is actually the same ship we were on during our Alaskan cruise (you can find my blog entries about that by clicking HERE). That was my very first cruise, so this ship holds a special place in my heart. Being back on board made us feel really happy, and we even met a few crew members who were there with us during our Alaskan cruise – and some of them actually remembered us! Pretty amazing considering that was two years ago and they usually have about 2000 passengers on board for each voyage.
